The PRC is the premiere professional climbing event organizer in the United States. The goal of the PRC is to design an event that suits the needs of the client, host venue, sponsors, and the athletes. The PRC is very flexible in accommodating and entertaining spectators as well as television and Internet video when designing an event structure.
The following is a list of event types with descriptions and some flexible formatting ideas. All events will be held on an existing climbing wall at the venue location, portable wall system or a custom built climbing wall designed for the specific venue. The PRC can organize any combination of the following events at the same venue location.
PROFESSIONAL BOULDERING EVENT
The fastest growing and most competitive aspect of competition climbing. A climber attempts to climb a powerfully difficult route (referred to as a “boulder problem”) of up to 20 feet high. The goal of the climber is to get to the top of the route or as far as possible. Climbers are scored on how high they can climb. The climber attempts the route with out a rope but will have landing pads below in case of a fall. The body movements tend to be gymnastic in both climbing and falling. The dynamic exciting movement enhances the entertainment value of this type of climbing.
Usually, there is a qualifying round of 4 routes and a final round of 3 routes. Climbers are scored on how high they can climb, the number of completed routes and the number of attempts in relation to other competitors. The climbers are grouped male/female as juniors, usually under 16 years old, and adults, 16 and over. The bouldering format can provide several days and nights of ongoing entertainment. The PRC can attract at least 100 juniors and 100 adult participants from across the North America for this type of elite level event.
PROFESSIONAL DUEL SPEED EVENT
Speed climbing is formatted so that there are 2 identicle routes. The Speed format is simple for anyone to understand and exciting because it is a race between 2 climbers on a relatively easy route, which allows them to climb quickly without falling. The first climber to the top wins the race. The competitors are bracketed according to a qualifying time for the top 8, 16, or 32 climbers. The climbers tend to climb faster and faster in each round as they get accustomed to the route.
PROFESSIONAL DYNO EVENT
Akin to the “best trick” comps in other action sports, the Dyno comp is a dynamic competition event in which a climber will start near the bottom of the wall and have to jump up to the next set of holds. The movement tends to be explosive, large and dramatic as do the falls if the move is not completed. Dyno competitions have several rounds and as the rounds progress, the movement tends to be larger and more dramatic. The climbers that complete the largest movements will win the competition. Dyno events have a very adaptable format, are easy to understand, fast paced and very entertaining.
CITIZENS RECREATIONAL EVENT
In a citizens competition, local citizens or spectators can climb in an entry level recreational event. A typical citizens event format involves a climbing wall with up to 50 different super-imposed routes demarcated with color-coded tape. Citizens have 3 hours to choose which routes to climb. The routes are rated in points and the 5 highest point level routes climbed per climber are combined for a total final score. The climbers are grouped and scored against each other in the same age group for juniors or the same ability level for adults. The format can be changed to suit the venue. The citizens competition is a way for local beginner and recreational climbers to participate in the sport on the same surface as the professional climbers.
DEMONSTRATION/EXHIBITION EVENT
In an exhibition event, the PRC will hire professional climbers to demonstrate various forms and techniques of bouldering, speed and dynamic movements. A demonstration event can be both entertaining and instructional.
CELEBRITY EVENT
In a celebrity event, local or national celebrities can compete against each other in any number of formats listed. A dual speed event for example, would be very exciting between several well-known or local celebrities. Celebrity events can be tied into local or national charities.
